The Inaugural NHS Implant Analysis Conference

Last November, we had the honour of hosting the first-ever NHS Implant Analysis Service Conference, bringing together a global community dedicated to improving patient outcomes through innovation, collaboration, and expertise.

This ground-breaking event, facilitated by the NHS Implant Analysis Service, was curated to share meaningful insights on the physical analysis of retrieved implants and to discuss this crucial information to improve patient safety.

Each year, around 20,000 people in the UK suffer through painful revision surgery to replace implants for joints such as hip and knee. This isn’t just a burden on patients, but also on the NHS, which incurs millions of pounds in additional surgery costs and litigation fees. Yet, once the surgery is complete, around 95% of implants are simply thrown away.

Throughout the meeting we heard presentations from Orthopaedic Surgeons inclusive of Mr Tony Nargol and Jeremy Latham, Experts in Orthopaedic Engineering including Professor Tom Joyce, Legal perspectives from Irwin Mitchell Solicitors and the vital inclusion of a patient advocate session from Mrs Sharon Craddock. As well as our UK-based faculty and delegates, we also had the privilege of Dr Moreica Pabbruwe, Senior Biomedical Engineer, fly over nine-thousand miles across the globe from Centre for Implant Technology and Retrieval Analysis (CITRA) based at Royal Perth Hospital, Australia. The event was sponsored by industry-leading manufacturers, researchers and innovators and saw over 100 delegates make the trip to Newcastle Upon Tyne to discuss and debate such an important topic.

We’re pleased to now be able to publically share the comprehensive conference report and films of all seven faculty sessions. The summary document details the four take-home messages from the day: Joint Replacement Surgery, Joint Replacement Figures, Registries and Explant Analysis with key highlights from each presentation and the discussion themes which followed these. The full conference report comprises of 28 detailed pages illustrating the day as closely as possible and acting as a complimenting accompaniment to have on hand whilst viewing the recorded sessions.

We encourage you to share the assets from the day with peers and we’re open to discussing future collaborations with those in industry, please get in touch via the options below.
